queen - ruler of the entire alliance of purgatorio. second only to the alliance's diety.
king consort - mate of the queen. second only to her and the alliance's diety. challenges for this position must be approved by the queen.
heir apparent - first in line for the throne if the queen dies. usually the oldest of her offspring.
royal issue - all surviving offspring of the queen and king consort.
duke - second-in-command. leads the army, advises the royal family, and will take the crown if the queen dies and there are no surviving heirs.
duchess - mate of the duke. usually a superficial position, but may oversee the care of the herd's foals.
heir apparent - first in line for the position of duke/duchess if the current holder dies. usually the oldest of the duke/duchess' offspring.
issue - all surviving offspring of the duke and duchess.
* the position of duke is gender neutral (i.e., both stallions AND mares can try for the position). in the case of a mare getting the position, her rank will be renamed duchess, and her mate will instead be the duke. she will receive all responsibilities of the duke's position (army/advising/etc).
gentlemen - regular herd stallions.
ladies - regular herd mares.
youth - regular herd foals not related to the queen/king consort/duke/duchess.
imprisoned - slaves won in battle or prisoners of war. may not leave the terrain without permission.
exiled - those banished from the entire alliance. may not enter any lands in purgatorio without permission, and are subject to extreme punishment if found within purgatorio's borders.
executed - those who died dishonorably (murders/executions/etc).
buried - those who died within the herd (who were not executed or otherwise).
